The I-WATE target area neighborhoods (TAN), as defined by zip code are: TAN-32301 (Bond), TAN32310 (Southside Bond),  and TAN32304 (Frenchtown, a Front Porch Community). In total, 92,868 people, 33.5% of Leon County’s total population, reside in these three ZIP codes (1). Non-Hispanic Blacks make up 30.2% of the total population of Leon County. Disparities in incomes in Tallahassee are shown here in this infographic, whereby poverty rates exceed 60% in TAN 32304 and 30% in 32301 and 32310 compared to rates as low as 5 – 13% in the most affluent neighborhoods (32308, 32311, and 32312). TANs also carry a disproportionate amount of leading chronic diseases2; stroke rates are 1.3 times higher among non-Hispanic Blacks(NHB) than among non-Hispanic Whites (NHW), heart disease mortality is 1.4 x higher for NHB than for Hispanics. Even more profound are disparities in morbidity rates for diabetes (~2x higher in NHB than in NHW) and hypertension (3.6x higher for NHB than for Hispanics, and 1.5 x higher for NHB than for NHW) (2).
