“When the doctor told me that I had diabetes I said to him, the devil is a lie…NOT ME. But, I was in the hospital with a blood sugar over 400. All I want to do is lose some of this weight, get my blood sugar down, and get off of some of this medicine. I believe I can do it,” Mrs. Johnson. [Then we talked about diabetes, it’s etiology and control (especially roles of diet and physical activity].

You hear so much about eating right and exercise for better health. Seems like most of the people I meet have diabetes, high blood pressure, or too much fat in the blood…Everybody’s fat, Mr. Johnson. [Then we talked about links between obesity and chronic diseases; and we discuss foods and food components that lower chronic disease risk and help to control symptoms].

“This program helps me to be a better planner and aware of what I am eating. I am looking at portions now”, Constance Clements.

“I’m just so proud of Jada (aged 7) and Kayla (aged 9). They can tell you all of the DASH food groups and Kayla also now knows how many servings she should have from each food group; and some of the main nutrients. This has to help her make better food choices. I’ve been doing some of the short DASH chants with my daycare Kids”, Ms. Harris. [Then we talked about the importance of primary prevention and the importance of intervention at the earliest possible ages].

"I have learned so much about the DASH diet and the value of healthy eating from Dr. Rankins. I am not saying that I always make healthy food choices; but when I mess-up, it's not because I don't know better. I am grateful to this program for my what I have learned. Truthfully, money for healthy food is my main barrier, " Ms. Sanks. [Then we talked about stretching the food dollar]

“I never thought I’d like collard greens without fat meat. Didn’t think that they would have any taste at all…but these are great and I can’t wait to cook them and let some friends taste them; they won’t believe it”, Jackie. [Then we talked about herbs and spices and the foods that they flavor best. We also distributed a flyer that we had developed that we named “Spice Girls”, which gave background and uses of numerous spices].

“This is what I have been doing for some time: I get up early in the morning and I get my neighbors, knock on doors as I pass by; or I yell out, Lets Go!. I will generally get three or four of them…and off we go to Lake Ella to walk. That’s what keeps me going”, Betty. [Then we talked about being motivators for others, especially friends, family, neighbors; how by motivating others we also keep ourselves motivated].

“After I leave here I go home and cook one of the things that you cooked. Most of the time, I have to stop by the store and get some of the things that go in it. But I cook it and I like it; Tank (aged, 5 years) even likes it,” Tank’s grandmother. [Then we talked about bargain shopping, coupons, farmers’ markets, storing foods].
